If you have been arrested for a drug crime in Colorado State, you are at major risk of receiving a harsh sentence that could have a lifelong negative impact on your future. While it is true that the sentence you can receive varies greatly depending on certain circumstances, drug crime convictions are notorious for being steep in even misdemeanor cases. First time violators are given almost no leniency when compared to first time offenders of other crimes, and repeat offenders stand to fare even worse, potentially being charged with felonies for simple possession accusations.

Drug crime convictions in Colorado often involve:

  • Years behind bars
  • Thousands of dollars in fines
  • Extended probation periods

In addition to what sort of illicit drug or controlled substance is involved with your charges, the potential penalties you could be facing will also alter due to what specific drug crime you are accused of doing. The following activities all fall under the umbrella term of drug crime:

Unique Marijuana Laws in Colorado State Legislature

The recent approval of Amendment 64, which legalizes marijuana in limited and specific ways, has received nationwide attention. This law does not lift any and all restrictions on the cultivation, possession, distribution, and use of cannabis, however.

Instead, the possession of marijuana is legal only for individuals over the age of 21 years and is limited to no more than 1 ounce of the drug. You cannot consume marijuana in public, you cannot drive while under the effects of marijuana, and cultivation is limited to no more than six cannabis plants.

Complication in the Law Lead to Unjust Arrests

Marijuana may have been legalized but that does not mean that you can no longer be arrested for a cannabis-related criminal offense. For example, possession of between 2 and 6 ounces of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000. Many people arrested for marijuana drug crimes in Colorado after Amendment 64 took effect report that misunderstandings in the gray areas in the law were the only reason they were allegedly partaking in an illegal activity.
